Student Led Conference
Research has shown that developing a student’s ability to talk about their progress and learning leads to greater student achievement. At Hindustan International School, Guindy we believe that learning needs to be visible and students need to be able to articulate their progress and respond to questions like: How I am going? Where am I going? What is my next learning step? We have been involved in a number of initiatives over the years, all focused on improving student achievement, one such initiative being the STUDENT LED CONFERENCE.
The Student Led Conference was conducted on 30 November, for Students from Grade 1 to 10. The micro planning ensured that the event was smooth. The designated rooms for each grade were set up a day before with six stations, one for each subject. Parents walked into the classrooms with their children. Together, families visited all the learning stations set up around the classrooms. They moved from station to station as their wards took the role of a teacher and explained each task to their parents. Each station activity was designed to take about five minutes. Parents could read the instructions and interact with their children, but as observers and not participants, in those activities. Teachers circulated around the stations, playing the role of felicitators, answering questions providing feedback on the student’s progress.
Parents’ feedback for the event was overwhelming as they were pleasantly surprised by the conceptual learning by which Students had demonstrating their academic progress, taking ownership of their learning experiences, and demonstrating to their parents what they know and are learning at school.
